The Price Tag
It may be tempting to grab that ultra-trendy, inexpensive jacket off the rack at your local chain store, but there's a hidden (and very real) cost behind "fast fashion." Here's what you might not notice between the seams of that garment, and what you can do to make a positive impact.
What is fast fashion, really? It gets a bad rap, and with good reason: This cheaply made, typically unethically produced clothing is generated at tremendous speed in order to satisfy our hunger for the latest trends. In order to create it, factory workers across the globe are typically paid a pittance and subject to workplace abuses.
The eco impact: The clothing industry accounts for about 10% of the world’s carbon emissions and about 20% of its wastewater. And of the total fiber used for clothing, 87% of it is ultimately incinerated or disposed of in a landfill.
How your castoffs cast a shadow: The average item of clothing is worn only 14 times, and the amount of clothing Americans discard each year has approximately doubled in the last 20 years. And when that fabric decomposes in a landfill, it generates methane gas, and emits toxic chemicals and dyes into our soil and water.
Seem grim? It doesn't have to be. Read on to find out how high-tech brands are inventing a greener fashion future, and learn how you can do your part, right from within your own closet. |

Sounding the alarm: What if some of your worst-case environmental scenarios came true? That’s what happened to Dr. James Hansen, aka the “father of global warming.” While testifying before Congress on the dangers of climate change, the ex-NASA scientist warned of impending catastrophe — and was proven right.
End of broadcast: After launching less than a month ago, CNN+ will shut down at the end of April, amid reports that the paid streaming service gained only about 150,000 subscribers. (While many employees will be absorbed into the TV network and website, there’s sure to be a slew of layoffs.)
Opening the door: President Joe Biden has expedited the immigration process for refugees fleeing Ukraine after more than 5,000 migrants from the country were detained in the U.S. last month alone. The president also announced another $800 million in military assistance to Ukraine, and a ban on all Russian ships from U.S. ports.
King of comedy?: Jon Stewart made a name for himself as the host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central, but as The Atlantic explores, a lot has changed since his reign on the network came to an end, and his comeback on Apple+ has proven to be anything but easy.
