Concerns over President Trump’s trade policies appear to be dragging down the stock market. Yesterday, the Dow Jones dropped 478 points, or 1.1%, while the S&P 500 fell 0.76 percent. The Nasdaq, which is heavy on tech stocks, fell 0.18% after logging its worst day since 2022 on Monday.
So, what gives? “Markets hate uncertainty, and right now, there’s a lot of it, which is what investors are reacting to,” says Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at Bankrate. That uncertainty includes the tariffs Trump is slapping onto products from countries like Mexico, Canada, and China, which have been changing by the day.
Meanwhile, fears of further economic fallout are growing. We asked three finance experts whether they think we’re at risk of a recession — and how you could be affected if so. |

President Trump's sweeping 25% tariffs on all imported steel and aluminum came into effect this morning, escalating America's trade war with foreign competitors. Meanwhile, Canada agreed to back down from its surcharges on electricity for U.S. customers, prompting Trump to retract his extraordinary threat of 50% tariffs on Canadian aluminum and steel. Ukraine says it'll accept the Trump administration's proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, and the U.S. has agreed to lift a pause on intelligence sharing with Kyiv and resume military assistance. "The United States will communicate to Russia that Russian reciprocity is the key to achieving peace," a joint statement read. Greenland's center-right Demokraatit opposition party has won the Arctic island’s parliamentary election. The new government, which is in favor of gradual independence from Denmark, will also have to navigate Trump's efforts to acquire the territory. The Education Department announced that it will fire 1,300 employees. Together with the hundreds who've accepted buyouts and those who've already been fired, that will effectively halve the agency's staffing. Trump has said he wants to dismantle the department altogether — but he'd need approval from Congress. Seven people charged in the death of Sam Nordquist, a Black trans man, have pleaded not guilty to torturing and killing him. Four of them, including Nordquist's former partner, Precious Arzuaga, also pleaded not guilty to aggravated sexual abuse charges. |
